AIDS Meds Reach More People...

About two million people in the world are receiving antiviral medications for the treatment of HIV – an increase of 700,000, the United Nations reported on Tuesday. This is one million less than the (optimistic) three million people the World Health Organization (WHO) hoped would be receiving treatment by the end of 2005.

Sub-saharan Africa saw the most dramatic increase, with the number of infected people receiving AIDS treatment increasing thirteenfold to 1.3 million at the end of 2006, compared with only 100,000 in 2003.

Survival rates in developing countries were shown in studies to be about 93 percent in people beginning antiretroviral therapies – a rate similar to those shown in the U.S. and other developing nations. The U.N. estimates that in Latin America and the Caribbean, 355,000 patients – or 72 percent of those in need of  life-saving AIDS drugs – are now receiving them. These are the highest treatment rates outside the industrialized world.
